How To Prepare for a Maternity Shoot

Congrats, baby mama! If you’re about to capture some moments with your new baby bump, we have some nifty hacks for you so that you’ll look your best during a maternity photoshoot!

Attire
If you wear spectacles, wear contact lenses to the shoot instead. This is to avoid the camera capturing any reflections or glare from your eyewear during the shoot.
Wear comfortable, fitting undergarments. If you’re wearing clothing that hugs your body, you might want to don seamless underwear to avoid any visible panty lines.
If you are wearing something shoulder or back baring, do wear a strapless bra or nipple pasties.
Be sure to wear nude undergarments that closely match your skin tone if you’re wearing light coloured or white coloured tops.
If you’re going to be photographed in socks, wear a pair of nice socks to the shoot. Avoid wearing socks that have holes or are worn out.
Communication is key—do discuss your attire with your photographer before the shoot. He/she may have some suggestions and tips for you too.

Hair
To avoid limp and greasy hair on the day of shoot, do wash your hair. Some people prefer washing it the night before, or on the day of the shoot. For clients who have oily hair, we encourage them to shower and blow dry their hair before arriving for a photo session.
Shave (everywhere that matters)! This is especially if you know you’ll be wearing a tube top or a sleeveless top that will expose your arms and underarms, or an attire that might reveal your legs and thighs.

Skincare & rest
Take care of your skin in advance. Moisturise at least 3 days before the shoot to achieve healthy and supple skin, which will not only make it easier to apply makeup, but will also make your skin appear more radiant in photos.
Photoshoots are physically tiring; having a good night’s sleep means more energy and a better overall shoot experience. This also reduces puffiness in your face and eyes.
Go ahead—pamper yourself and put on a hydrating mask the night before the shoot!
Avoid drinking too much water, and avoid having supper/snacks the night before the shoot—drinking and eating late at night often results in bloating the morning after.
On the day of the shoot, be sure to eat well! As the process is physically tiring, we often encourage our customers to have a heavy meal before coming in for a shoot.

Makeup
Engage in your usual skincare routine on the day of the shoot before getting your makeup done.
At Lightime Studio, we offer professional makeup services for all photoshoot packages. However, if you have sensitive skin, do bring along your own makeup and skincare products—we’ll be happy to use them during the pre-shoot makeup session.
Bonus tip: If you’re attending a studio photoshoot and you have to apply your own makeup, your foundation should be light and clear, and you should apply BB cream to illuminate your skin and prevent blemishes from showing on camera.
We encourage you to put on heavier makeup than usual—apply a thicker coat of eyeliner, eye shadow, lipstick, blush, and contour your face properly, as the strong flash from the camera may cause your facial features to be less prominent in photos.
If you want to remove your makeup after the shoot is over, do bring your own makeup remover and cotton pads.
Putting on nail polish? Apply a coat or pattern that fits the theme of the shoot, and the outfit you’re wearing.
And finally, enjoy the shoot! Bring yourself (as well as some ultrasound scans), and we’ll take care of the rest. 😉

Lightime Studio’s maternity photoshoot packages are designed to be fuss-free and all inclusive. Each photo package includes a makeup session, hair styling, nail treatment, and maternity outfits for our mums-to-be.
